1885-CC
T is no question that a low mintage like 228,000 will attract its share of attention. At this level, it is the fourth lowest-mintage Morgan dollar. Only the 1895-P, the 1893-S, and the 1894-P had smaller initial quantities. All collectors and investors should note, however, that this is a mirage, due to the Treasure Department’s hoard of Carson City Morgan dollars. In the GSA sales of 1973-74, which attempted to sell this hoard to the public, a total of 148,285 1885-CC dollars in mint condition were offered at $60 each. This quantity represents 66% of the entire original mintage. Even before these sales, a large quantity of uncirculated specimens were on the market. Today, dealers estimate that over 90% of all the pieces they see from this issue are in Mint State. Thus, it is very unusual to see a circulated 1885-CC dollar!
At the conclusion of the GSA sales, 31,569 coins remained unsold. Another 1885-CC hoard has surfaced in recent years. The LaVere Redfield coins contained an estimated several hundred coins, which only added to the already abundant quantity of Mint State pieces.
This issue is almost always found boldly struck with a frosty appearance. Bagmarks tend to be at a minimum; those specimens found heavily abraded should grade no better than MS-60. Mint State 65 and 65+ coins can be bought in quantity and tfore this issue should realistically be tagged as a common coin in mint condition.
On rare occasions, counterfeit 1885-CC dollars can be seen on the market. The deception is usually accomplished by using a valid 1885-P dollar, which is common and inexpensive, as a base for soldering a CC mintmark.
The 1855-CC date is reasonably available in MS-65 cameo prooflike condition. The mirror surfaces of the fields run very deep and the devices have an icy appearance.

Morgan Dollars are a favorite of collectors everyw Authorized by the Bland-Allison Act of 1878, the dollars were designed by George T. Morgan, who had been a pupil of Wyon in the Royal Mint in London. His initial M is found at the base of the neck by the last lock of hair on the obverse, and on the reverse on the left most loop of the ribbon. They were made from 1878 to 1921, when the Peace dollar was adopted.
