Up for bids is a GAR type reunion ribbon from the IRON BRIGADE held Aug. 31 AND Sept 1 & 2 1886 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. I was curious about the Iron Brigade so I googled it and 's what I learned: The majority of the Iron Brigade was composed of young men from Wisconsin. T were 3 regiments from Wis. (2nd, 6th & 7th),and the 19th Indiana. They became the best known fighting brigade in the Army of the Potomac. To offset heavy losses, a Michigan regiment was later added to keep this brigade a uniquely Western unit. The men of the Iron Brigade first made a name for themselves as members of Rufus King's Brigade. By Antietam they earned more titles. The men of the south first knew them as "That damn Black Hat Brigade and later to all as the Iron Brigade because they stood like iron in the face of withering enemy fire. The truth is, the history of the Iron Brigade begins like a song of glory and victory assumed and ends with the brigades virtual destruction on the first day of Gettysburg. T is a companion piece to this ribbon which I will be listing separately and that is a metal badge which says Co. E 2nd Wis. Inf. When I googled this unit I found that the only member of Co. E listed in the 2nd Wis. Infantry was Sylvester Pitcher of Fond du Lac, Fourth Ward. The ribbon is 8" long and 2 1/2" wide. It is in very good condition with just a little fraying on the end. T was some distortion to the photos when I tried to turn them so left them sideways. T are still some funny lines in the photos that aren't in the ribbon. This was in a collection but does not have a number on it. I have other items from this collection on now and will be listing more items from this collection so please watch my listings. I will be doing 10 day listings on these things. This ribbon does not say GAR on it, so I assume this group of soldiers formed their own organization to have reunions and commemorate their service during the Civil War. After the Civil War, State and Federal leaders from President Lincoln on down had promised to care for "those who had borne the burden, his widows and orphans", but they had little knowledge of how to accomplish this task. T was also little political pressure to see that the promises were kept. With this as a background, groups of men began joining together first for comraderie, then for political power. The most powerful among the various organizations would be the Grand Army of the Republic (G A R). Founded in Decatur, Illinois on April 6, 1866 by Benjamin Stephenson, membership was limited to honor discharged veterans of the Union Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Rvenue Cutter Service who had served between 1861 and 1865. By 1890, t would be 409,489 veterans of the "War of the Rebellion" I will ship First Class for 2.00. I am always happy to combine shipping. Thanks for viewing and please bid!!
