A 10 1/2 x 8 inch LETTER signed by Presiding Bishop William B. Preston on the Presiding Bishop's Office letterhead, dated "Salt Lake City, Sept. 28, 1887." Folded, very minor discoloration at middle fold, otherwise very good condition--the ink on the letter is darker and more readable than the scan makes it appear. The letter says "Pr[esident] A[braham] O[wen] Smoot, Dear Bro: this authorizes the transfer of the two (2) "Richards" lots as also the two (2) lots on 7th St. across the road from the Old Academy Property, said Transfer to be made to Reed Smoot, Esq. Value received for said lots namely the sum of Thirty Eight Hundred dollars (R 1/B #49). [signed] Wm. B. Preston." This letter appears to have been written by a scribe and signed by Preston. Preston served as the fourth Presiding Bishop of the L.D.S. Church. He was baptized in California in 1857 after associating with the Thatcher family, who were members of the Church and immediately called to the ministry by President George Q. Cannon. He served in various capacities almost immediately, and played an important role in the "Utah War." He helped form the "Y.X. Company" which freigted mail and good acroos the plains. He played a significant part in civic, business, and religious affairs in Utah. Abraham O. Smoot was president of the Utah Stake of Zion from 1868 to 1895. He read more
