This auction is for an original 1887 complimentary calendar from the GREAT ROCK ISLAND ROUTE of the CHICAGO,ROCK ISLAND,AND PACIFIC RAILWAY. This calendar was saved by my family as a momento of my grandmother's birth in 1887.This calendar is missing the first 3 months of 1887 which were removed at some time in the past 120 years. The last 9 months beginning with April,1887 remain and are in great condition. Beneath the calendar for December,1887 is a map of the United States and Canada showing the Rock Island Route as it existed in 1887.The printing beside and under the calendar may be difficult to read;so,I will print it out To the left of the calendar-Direct Route to All Points in Missouri,Kansas,Nebraska,Colorado,Utah,Nevada,New Mexico,Arizona,and California. To the right of the calendar- Direct Route to All Points in Minnesota,Dakota,Wyoming,Montana,Idaho,Oregon,Washington,and British Columbia. Beneath the calendar and starting from the right is: R.R.Cable President and Genl.Manager Chicago, E.St.John Assistant Genl.Manager Chicago,and E.A.Holbrook Genl.Ticket and Pass.Agent. At the very bottom is: The Henderson-Achert Co.Lith.Cin.O. Each month on the calendar has different wise sayings at the beginning and end of each month w t is space. This calendar was saved by my grandmother's family for her. It was then given to my grandmother when she grew up. When my grandmother passed away,my mother received this calendar. After my mother passed away,I received this calendar. As can be expected,a calendar saved from 1887 cannot be perfect and this calendar is no exception. This calendar was originally rolled up and stored. When the calendar was in storage at sometime,a heavy object was placed upon it. This heavy object caused this calendar to develop some very deep horizontal creases in the paper and one very large(complete) horizontal break in the paper . T is one small nail hole at the top-probably w the calendar was nailed to the wall.T is one vertical tear of about 1 inch at the bottom. This calendar is very fragile and will remain in the frame for shipping. The calendar can be taken out of the frame but very carefully-unfortunately even when taken out carefully it will be in two pieces. The calendar itself has no fading and very little yellowing. The beautiful design and artwork around the calendar is in good condition considering the age and storage conditions of the calendar. The calendar itself measure approximately 13 and 1/2 inches wide and 21 and 1/2 inches tall.THIS IS THE REAL THING!!!!! T IS NOTHING THIS OLD LIKE THIS ON E-BAY!!!!! IF YOU ARE A DIEHARD RAILROAD BUFF,THIS IS FOR YOU!!!!! Insurance will be required since t is glass in the frame and the calendar itself is very fragile. Over the last 100 years, my family and I have accumulated many interesting items. Some of these items are coins, postage stamps, paper money (US and foreign), books, toys, postcards, advertising items, pharmacy items and more.
