1887 School Autograph Book ownedby Hattie in Portsmouth, VA Up for auction is a small school autograph book owned by a young woman named Hattie who went to school in Portsmouth, VA during 1887. The autograph book contains approximately 20 sentimental notes from schoolmates that were hand-written to Hattie from April to November 1887. Most are written in pen. A few are in pencil. Since the farewell notes end in November 1887, and based upon the tenure of some of the notes, it appears that she was either leaving school to get married. I found this autograph book to be very interesting in a number of ways: There is some extraordinary penmanship examples in this book from the days of pen and inkwell. The archaic English usage of "fs" for "ss", such as Mifs Hattie, instead of Miss Hattie. The wide range of sentimental notes written to Hattie. Some are from the heart and others contain quotes and sayings of the day. One note from Hattie’s friend Belle was a popular saying of the day and is attributed to the year 1887: "As sure as comes your Wedding Day, A broom to you I'll send; In sunshine, use the brushy part, in storm, the other end".
