OFFICAL MAP OF MENDOCINO COUNTY, MT. DIABLO MD. SHOWING REDWOOD BELT. DRAWN & COMPILED BY N.B. BRAKENRIDGE, SAN FRANCISCO. (1887). WALL MAP, 37.5 BY 46 INCHES. With 2 tipped-in photographs of a redwood forest and Navarro Harbor. Not much is known about this exceptionally rare early county map, save that it is the first large scale map of Mendocino County ever done, and it dates from the year 1887. It so rare, in fact, that no auction records exist for it whatsoever. I have only found 1 in any library, at the Bancroft Library. This map is in spectacular condition, with all of its sheen & varnish, nice even deep original colors and tonality with no fading or major cracking (just a bit near the top, shown), and only the slightest loss and the slightest staining in a very very few spots. With the proper framing it could be flattened and stretched so that any of the humps you see (especially horizontally across the bottom) would be smoothed out. This was really hard to photograph because of its size and the fact that it is behind plastic so there are unavoidable reflections, but let me assure you that it looks so much better than these photographs will allow, really. The rollers that it was originally on are gone. The linen borders along both sides are fully intact, and as stated, the sheen of the original varnish is all there. It is a vastly different Mendocino scene that it is today, with the broad expanse of green showing the Redwood Belt, the unpopulated Anderson Valley, Ukiah City near the old Yokaya Ranchero, the old Swiss settlement of Christine and Cuffey's Cove, long since vanished as townships still existing, and the Round Valley Indian Reservation at the top portion. There are numerous areas that are marked 'Unsurveyed'. In many respects, Mendocino was still unexplored in 1887. The scale is 1/2 mile to 1 inch, quite alot of detail. In short, this is a map in collector's condition that you will likely never see again, anywhere. To ship this right will cost around 80.00, well worth it. Added to this cost will be the cost of insurance, a must here. I've tried to eliminate as much glare as I could in the pics, but there is some I couldn't avoid. In reality, the tonality is even throughout. This is a genuine rarity folks.
