1888 JOAQUIN MURIETA MURRIETA CALIFORNIA BANDIT OUTLAW "... this famous bandit, who .... was finally captured by Capt. Love, his head cut off and publicly exhibited at a dollar a look, and later sold at public auction for $63.00..." [WILLIAMS, Henry Llewellyn] "JOAQUIN, (THE CLAUDE DUVAL OF CALIFORNIA) or THE MARAUDER OF THE MINES." New York. Pollard & Moss. 1888. Octavo (5.25 inches x 7.25 inches). 206 (2) pp. First re-issue after 1865 (or possibly 1871) first DeWitt issue of this title. Original red decorated cloth. Re-cased (crude, but adequate) long ago replacing endpapers and pastedowns with brown, 'craft' like paper. Left margin of title page a bit obscured with the 'T' in 'The' covered. 1947 Eberstadt clipping pasted to FFEP for this specific copy - likely w it was acquired. The ad sheet at rear fortunately retained. Boards with average or better wear; a few old drip stains to cover. Overall, very good or better example of a truly scarce title in virtually any condition. This title was originally issued in 1865 by Robert DeWitt (published date) but is also thought by some (John Howell among them) to have been issued a bit later; perhaps 1870 or 1871. This copy is the 1888 first re-issue of the DeWitt edition . T was also an 1889 re-issue also by Pollard. Among the most available (and affordable) of any of the 19th century read more
