The Grand tour of the West c. 1880-1885 Offered for sale is a set of albumen cabinet photographs taken by my Great-Grandfather (Ole) on a trip from South Dakota to St. Johns, Oregon. The trip was a major undertaking in 1889 and very time consuming as well. Not only that but cameras of the day were not exactly pocket-size! The trip probably took two months. The Columbia River made it possible to travel a bit faster than overland all the way. The story that goes with the pictures has been passed down from one generation to the next. My Great-Grandfather's name will be provided to the buyer for provenance along with the family names the photos have passed through since they were taken. He was a merchant and undertaker. The family remained in South Dakota until 1959 when my father retired and sold the store. The photos encompass housing construction, the oil industry, river and stagecoach travel, the G.A. R., and ships. A very unique and collectible set of photographs and certainly one of a kind. Please do not ask me to break up the set. T are 20 photographs. I could not show them all in one listing but will be happy to email all of the photos if you will send your email address. The photos are identified at the bottom in Ole's handwriting (the one that says Seattle- I could not read his handwriting when I was about 8 or 9 and printed Seattle in pencil on the bottom of the card alongside his notation). I will leave that to the buyer to erase or keep. +++++These photos are black and white not sepia toned as they appear in the photos shown. This is a camera error that I cannot seem to correct. ++++++++ The Bredersons had wired Ole (my Great-Grandfather) requesting supplies that were not readily available in Oregon. He agrees to bring the needed items and also get a look at the West. T was no point in just going to deliver goods- he might as well see the sights. He also needs someone to go with him in case of an emergency or trouble en route. Fortunately, he was fluent in the Sioux language and had lived amongst the Sioux. His first stop is Michelson's farm in Friegal, N. Dakota (photo is not among the 12 pictured). Mr. Michelson had agreed to go along and also bring a wagonload of supplies. The two and their wagons head first for Montana and my Great-Uncle's ranch. They head into Butte, Montana w Ole photographs the oil wells and refineries(see photo). They continue on to the Columbia River w they load their wagons on the Chas. R. Stevens steamer (see photo). The steamer takes them through the locks (see photo) on the Columbia River and north to Spokane (see photo), Washington. He photographs the rapids on the Columbia River (not shown) and dam (not shown) on the outskirts of Spokane, WA. They follow the river down to Seattle, go to Rivena (?) Park w he photographs Michelson in front of the Red Woods like the tourists do today (not shown). The steamer goes on to Portland and the Marblehead w he photographs the Concord Ship (see photo). They take the wagons off the steamer and head to St. Johns. They deliver the supplies and leave the wagons, and take the stagecoach. Their first destination is Sacramento, California w he photographs the capitol. The stagecoach then takes them to San Francisco. While in San Francisco, t is a Grand Army of The Repulican Parade (see photo) of which he snaps a picture and he then goes to the docks and photographs the U.S. Army transport the "Thomas" (see photo). He crosses the Rockies (not shown) and stops at the stagecoach stop on the way to Steamboat Springs, Colorado (see photo). He also photographs the stagecoach with Michelson standing on the side (see gallery photo # 1). Their last stop is in Denver w he takes a photo of the American Indian killing a Buffalo(?) in front of some civic building (not shown). From Denver the two head home to the Dakota Territory.
