1889-CC Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded MS-62. Well struck with a hint of light golden tone. A popular key date. Only 350,000 minted. An elevated degree of fresh luster springs to life beneath the toning accents and spreads quickly out through the fields and across the main devices. Never once yielding at the centers, much more detail can be found on this `89-CC strike than on the more typical example of the date. A rock-solid coin that will sure attract wide notice. Bidders will not likely allow this to be bought without a stiff fight. Why the low mintage in 1889 when figures in the early 1880s and early 1890s were much greater? The main reason had to do with politics, and a tight-pursed Democratic President by the name of Grover Cleveland. Cleveland, upon coming into office in 1885, closed the Nevada mint as an economy measure. The mint did not reopen until July 1 of 1889. It so happens, in January of 1889, Cleveland`s Republican successor was happy to listen to his Nevada constituents and restore the Mint`s funding. However, with production beginning in mid-year, only six months of production of 1889-dated dollars resulted in the low figure cited above. Nearly half of the Mint State survivors are Prooflike or Deep Mirror Prooflike in finish, odd as that may seem, but the difficulty for Morgan Dollar collectors is in just finding a respectable Mint State example to satisfy demand. This lustrous quality survivor is boldly contrasted between the frosty textured devices and strong relief on the devices. Pop 74; 106 finer (PCGS # 7190).
