Unusual 1889 railroad/train station "Inter-locking and Automatic Signals" ledger book. The ledger begins in 1889 (outside of book says March, 1889) and has entries through 1901. I assume that train station did inspections on all trains coming through. This ledger does not appear to belong to a single rail company, as it mentions several different rail companies:
Illinois Central Railroad Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad Elgin, Joliet and Eastern Railway Co. Waukegan and Southwestern Railway Co. Chicago Peoria and St. Louis Railway Company Chicago and Western Indiana Railroad Company Metropolitan West Side Elevated Railroad Company Michigan Central Railroad Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railway Wabash Railroad Co. Ohio and Mississippi Railway Co. Chicago and Northern Pacific Railroad Company Chicago and Alton Railroad Company Baltimore and Ohio One interesting note is dated March 14th, 1893 "Baltimore and Ohio and Illinois Central Rail Road Co. and the World's Columbian Exposition". I assume the Columbian Exposition had trains pass through whichever railroad depot this ledger is from. I would assume, based on this information, that this ledger is out of a train station in the Chicago area. Each page gives the following information: 1. File No. 2. Petition Filed (gives dates) 3. Location of Crossing 4. Engineer's Report 5. Final Action of Commission A really neat railroad book. T is overall "rusting on this books. I would call it somewhat fragile. Binding is quite tight. Appears to be no missing pages. Top of spine has an old piece of tape that is still attached. Leather spine cover is loose and torn. Other wear is just typical of a book this age. Happy bidding!!
