Offered is a 2 volume set - The Soldier In Our Civil War - A Pictorial History of the conflict from beginning to the end. Published in 1890 by Stanley Bradly. These volumes are over sized 16" X 12 1/2" and double page pictures are 25" x 16" - 918 pages total. Set was sold only by subscription. Cloth burgundy boards show wear, corners and spine are worn - pictures show covers darker than they really are. Gilt lettering and gilt soldiers on covers in oval with 24 insignia/emblems are very good. In Vol 1 frontis page and tissue are loose from spine. Vol 2 does not have loose pages, however t is some separation from the spine. T are some water stains on just a few pages such as the large pull out of "Bull Run" shown in picture #3. Interior pages are excellent - clean - not dog eared - slight toning from age. Books are heavily illustrated with black and white wood cut engravings of battle scenes on land and sea, famous and not so famous individuals, maps, negro participation as well as written documentation detailing events from obscure to well known. Wood cuts are from sketches taken on the battlefield and from eye witnesses by illustrators Forbes , Waud, Taylor, Hall etc. T are hundreds of illustrations - many of them are double paged - and are so explicit they leave nothing to the imagination. Of particular interest to me is a chronological list of events and miscellaneous statistics itemizing every battle/skirmish/engagement/occupation/siege/evacuation/attack on a day to day basis! These events are recorded beginning 11/6/1860 (President Lincoln elected) to11/15/65 (mustering out of troops). For instance on May 23, 1862 t was a skirmish at Lewisburg, Va.; duration ?; Force: Fed - ?- Conf 3,000; Composition of Force: 36th & 44th Ohio Vols & 2nd W. Va. Cavalry; Commanders: Fed - Col. Crook - Conf Col. Heath; Killed: Fed 14 - Conf 38; Wounded: Fed 60 - Conf 36; Prisoners taken: Fed 100 - Conf 5; Missing: Fed ? Conf ?; Guns Taken: 4; Advantage: Fed. The information offered was edited by Motteloy & Copeland and assisted by generals/commanders of BOTH sides. The purpose of this history is to honor the memory of 4,000,000 soldiers who fought from a consciousness of duty and were equally patriotic whether they marched for the "Stars" or the "Bars". The aim is to record only facts as proven by 20 years of historical research. "No cause, no excuse, no apology for defeat, and no reason for victory is given." Picture #2: Commissioners to Washington from Southern Confederacy. Picture #3 Bull Run. Picture #4 6th Mass. Regiment repelling the attack of the mob in Pratt St., Baltimore. Picture #5 Railroad Battery built to protect the workmen while rebuilding the burned bridges on the Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. Picture #6 - Battle of Malvern Hill near Turkey Bend, James River, Va. Fought Tuesday 7/1/62 Final Repulse of the Confederates 5 o'clock PM. Shipping Media Mail. Any questions please contact me.
