1890-O
The Morgan dollars made in the 1890s from 1890 through 1897 are among the most difficult coins to find in Mint State in the entire series. The 1890-O is easily the most abundant of the eight New Orleans issues in mint condition. Its initial mintage of over 10 million is misleading. T is no question that heavy melting in the 20th century eliminated a large portion of the 1890-O population. Dealers have stated that of those surviving pieces seen on the coin market at present, only 4% are in Mint State.
The 1890-O Morgan dollar has the reputation of being a very poorly struck coin. It is common to see fully lustrous Mint State pieces not be able to meet the grading criteria for Extremely Fine, due to poor striking which resulted in no visible high point detail. Collectors and investors should note, however, that fully struck examples can be found without great difficulty, although these are not common.
The strike found on the poor quality coins shows a definite weakness in the center of the piece. Check the center of the eagle’s breast on the reverse and the ear and hairline area on the obverse. This issue has beautiful, bright luster and dull finishes are most unusual. Surface abrasions tend to be average. The right combination to seek is a boldly struck, fully lustrous, lightly bagmarked coin. These do exist in small quantities and can be found if the collector searches patiently.
Cameo prooflike pieces are scarce but exist within the 1890-O date. The mirror fields are not extremely deep, but the devices are frosty. Buyers should expect to see light-to-average bagmarks and an average strike, on which the feathers on the eagle’s breast show weakly. A high quality prooflike coin will cost the buy two to four times as much as an MS-65 specimen.

Morgan Dollars are a favorite of collectors everyw Authorized by the Bland-Allison Act of 1878, the dollars were designed by George T. Morgan, who had been a pupil of Wyon in the Royal Mint in London. His initial M is found at the base of the neck by the last lock of hair on the obverse, and on the reverse on the left most loop of the ribbon. They were made from 1878 to 1921, when the Peace dollar was adopted.
