Philips' Imperial Atlas Of The World - A Series of Eighty Maps Illustrating Every Aspect of Geographical Science. Engraved From the Latest Surveys and the Works of Eminent Travellers and Explorers. Each Map with the Exception of the Physical and Orographical Maps is Accompanied by a Complete Index in Which the Latitude and Longitude is Given. Published 1890 - George Philip and Son, Fleet Street, London. This beautiful, old leatherbound book measures 22" x 15.5". Front cover and spine are decorated with gold and all page edges as well. The book is complete. Seven maps are loose from the book. They are: The World In Hemispheres - The World Mercator - Physical Maps Sheet 1 and Sheet 2 - Atlantic Ocean - Europe Orographical and England & Wales. There are two maps that are partly loose - British Isles Orographical and France. One half of the Germany map is loose from the book. There is no damage to the maps (with the exception of the maps of Germany & France which have seperated in the middle on the fold line). I am not an expert on old atlases but it looks like the maps were made to be removed(?). Each double page map measures 21.5" x 27.25" and they are in very good condition. The book is in good condition showing normal age wear - bumped corners and spine edges and light rubbing along the edges. Also light foxing on end papers. The atlas also comes in a nice old handmade wooden box (walnut?). The box has 2 latches and a lock. Unfortunately the key was lost years ago. The wood on the bottom of the box has split in a couple of places which I hope you can see in the pictures. This is a large and heavy book. The book alone weighs 23.5 pounds.
