This is an extremely rare original lot of 11 black and white photographs taken in Portugal, circa late 1800s/early 1900s, in and around the Madeira, Funchal region, with views of canals, boats in the harbor, a variety of architecturally interesting buildings and roads, the hillsids, gardens, and other landscape backdrops with unusual trees and foliage, rocky coastline and the ocean, a railway leading down from the mountains to the ocean, people walking along and even being transported through the cobblestone streets (in one great image t is some sort of a conveyance similar to a large wooden and perhaps rattan sided sled, several groups of obvious tourists are being pulled along by native locals, seemingly young men and boys holding ropes, almost exactly as if they were being carried by sleigh through a snowdrift, or on a rickshaw through the narrow streets of China, and t is also a view of the other sled-like taxis awaiting customers, lined up on their sides next to the buildings on this street...really quite remarkable)...the images are each stamped on the reverse side by the Photographer, M. O. Perestrello, and three of the eleven images have some notation in pencil describing the subject of the images (Pico Porte, Hinton Garden, & Costa da Morte)....the photos each measure approx. 9" by 7" overall, and show remarkably nice detail throughout the grouping, and are all in generally very fine condition with only minimal edgewear and tiny corner bumps for the most part, a couple of small blems and'or nicks to extremities, and the one image of the "Sled Taxis" has a small triangular chip missing from the upper left hand corner....also, some of the images are slightly wavy edged, as if they were, and most probably this was the case, cut by hand at the phtographer's studio, who likely provided them as souvenirs for the Victorian era travelers who made such a routine of gathering keepsakes of the "strange and foreign" lands that they visited in their wanderings, before digital, video, or even polaroid cameras were available and commonplace...definitely a bygone and really charming time, and these photos are excellent examples of a much lost record of that past century.....Please Note: the occasional appearance of a wavy or distorted line in my scans of the text, illustrations, and covers is strictly an anomaly due to my faulty scanner settings, and is not present in the actual book; sorry for that, and a couple of the scans which show some tiny white spots in portions of the image are actually picking up on the tiny dust motes on the glass scanner bed, and these are likewise not present on the actual book...this is one in a series of items of ephemera and rare and unusual books and magazines relating to Fashion, Natural History, Science, Art, Aviation, and other subjects of great interest (take your pick), that I'll be listing over the next couple of weeks at whipplesbooks on ebay. Please Note: in response to inquiries, the highlighting or edge staining/bright spots which may appear in the borders of some of the scans of the photographs are strictly an anomaly due to my scanner's reflective scanning bed, and are not present on the surfaces of the actual photos whatsoever....thanks. The photogrpher, M. O. (Manuel Olim) Perestrello, was well known for his views of the Funchal district and the Madeira Island region taken during the late 1800s through the early 1900s, and he was based in the area during this time, being quite prolific at capturing the culture and environment of the people t
