Dr. Increase Mather,an American theologian, was born at Dorchester, Mass., on June 21, 1639. He preached for a while in England, and then became chaplain to an English regiment in the island of Guernsey. Afterwards, he became pastor of the North Church in Boston. He also temporarily served as president of Harvard University after the death of president Oakes. He again became president after the death of president Rogers, combined with his pastoral duties. He also played an important role in defending the liberties of the Massachusetts colony. He was a man of love, and was greatly used by God in many lives. Mather died on Aug.23, 1723.
