This Victorian silver "Wager" or "Bridal" cup exhibits a clever and curious design frequently found in 18th Century England or Holland. The base cup is formed by the skirt of an aristocratic woman, arms held aloft, hands grasping the scrolling brackets supporting the swivelling gimbal-type cup overhead. By tradition, one had to consume the contents of both cups without spilling a drop. These cups were popularly reproduced during the late 19th and early 20th century. The present example is probably of Continental origin, the marks on the lower lip being inconclusive. A fascinating piece offered by Chancery Lane Antiques...$3945.00
