Smith College - Northampton, Massachusetts Nice lot of (18) letters home, 1897-1901, from Clara A. Sprague - Smith College student, Class of 1901. Appx. (14) from Smith and (4) while Clara was in New York City. 5" x 8", in legible ink. Most with postally sent envelopes, addressed to mother, Mrs. C.A. Sprague, Auburn, NY. Filled with newsy Smith content -- incl. a play at Hubbard House; classmates; spreads (picnics in dorm rooms); playing basketball, Paradise Pond; Miss Seelye; Mrs. Clark; Mlle. Duvall; gathering pine to decorate Gym for Junior Prom; trolley ride. Two of the earlier letters are headed, "Tenney House". One of the best letters - 10+ pages - describes a Donation Party. In addition to food booths, t were a number of sideshows, incl. "Minstrels" and "Rough Riders" featuring a "female reporter" covering the Army. A few of the classmate names: Eleanor Putnam; Pearle Sanborne; Gertrude Norris. One letter contains a couple of small sheets showing her expenses. Overall excellent condition.
