A very scarce purple PABST blob top beer bottle from the Pre-Prohibition era. We dug it from an 1890's privy pit. It is embossed PABST (in nice bold letters on front shoulder) REGISTERED on bottom.....Hand blown....hand tooled odd double ring cork top collar.....round......beautiful amethyst purple color....11 1/4"tall....Excellent Condition with no chips or damage. A dug bottle with some light haze. I guarantee this PABST beer bottle is authentic and over 100 years old.

The beautiful amethyst or purple color of this glass is a result of the presence of manganese in the glass, which was a decolorizer to turn the glass clear. Most of the manganese used in glass factories came from Germany, so when WW1 broke out in 1914, it became much harder to obtain manganese. Other oxide decolorizers were then used instead, so most bottles made after 1918 or so donâe(tm)t turn amethyst. Glass that contains manganese, when exposed to ultraviolet rays of the sun or other sources of UV rays, causes the glass to turn amethyst. Some of my amethyst bottles and glass are purpled from years of exposure to natural sunlight. Others have been purpled with the use of strong UV lights in a boxâe¦and some have been purpled by a process called âeoeirradiationâe, which is a safe and permanent process which does the same thing as many years of exposure to natural sunlight, except much faster.
