ANTIQUE Unger Bros. Sterling Baby Rattle Art Nouveau "LOVE'S DREAM" Approx. Meas. 4 3/4"L by 2" weight 1.2oz reg scale UB mark on handle Sterling 925 (ACKNOWLEDGMENT AND THANKS TO "MR. T" FOR IDEN TIFYING THIS PATTERN AS LOVE'S DREAM) This is a charming rattle. Absolutely darling! Came from the Pritchard family estate auction held in Allegan, Michigan. Capt. Pritchard's involvement during the Civil War is well-documented and this rattle belonged to his son. It certainly could use a soft polish which I have not done and am selling this piece exactly as purchased at auction with the old patina. Heeeey, it's a baby rattle and it has signs of use and wear! Seems Pritchard's son took a strong-toothed fancy to this teething rattle as t are a few dents to the end of the piece and also to one side which I have photographed. The Mother of Pearl handle is wonderfully shaped and nicely tapered. Is very smooth and feels great to hold in your hand. The handle is secure and the sound it makes is nice and crisp, not tinny. T is a bit of old polish or residue on one side. I have never seen a figural scene quite like this before. Figural Mother/Cherub appropriately called "Love's Dream" pattern. Mother is smiling as the cherub/angel kisses her cheek while she sleeps. Just a nice touching moment. Sweet. Images are extremely detailed and both sides are decorated the same. Looks faaaar better than my pictures. Just think this is truly an extraordinary sterling rattle. Wonderful Nouveau styling with the repousse Mother/Cherub motif. Was probably given to the Pritchard family when their first son was born. If you are looking for an exceptional baby gift, or are a collector of Nouveau sterling or all things that shake and rattle, this piece would be superb. Just has soul.
