Miles from 1874 until just before the writing of the article in 1891. Major G. W. Baird had been on virtually every one of these campaigns with General Miles and had first hand eyewitness contact with virtually all of the activity that he describes in the article. The article requires quite a bit of reading time as it involves a lot of detail, plenty of names, places, very accurate dates, and locations for engagements, just tons of accurate information on the following Indian campaigns.
