1891 Magazine Article A Very Thorough Study of the Indian Campaigns of Nelson A. Miles---1874 to 1891 Up for bids is this rare 1891 magazine article from a prominent American monthly magazine. . . " The Indian Campaigns of General Miles" by Major G.Bard, U.S. Army. ( Documentation will be provided the winner of the auction indicating the date of publication,author and magazine name.SEE FOOTNOTE) This informative 20 page, illustrated magazine article describes in great detail all the major U.S. Army campaigns against Western Indians as they were directed by General Nelson A. Miles from 1874 until just before the writing of the article in 1891. Major G. W. Baird had been on virtually every one of these campaigns with General Miles and had first hand eyewitness contact with virtually all of the activity that he describes in the article. The article requires quite a bit of reading time as it involves a lot of detail, plenty of names, places, very accurate dates, and locations for engagements, just tons of accurate information on the following Indian campaigns. Covered in this article are -- #1-- the Indian Territory Expedition ---which began in the summer of 1874 to quell raids by Cheyennes, Kiowas, Arapahoes and Comanches into Indian Territory, Texas, southern Kansas and southeastern Colorado,--#2 a Conflict with Sitting Bull-- which describes a campaign in the southern Yellowstone region in the fall of 1876, and into the winter of 1877 --#3 "Crazy Horse Comes to Terms"---describes skirmishes that took place in January of 1877 against a large force of Sioux and Northern Cheyennes which led to the surrender of the Sioux under Crazy Horse and Little Hawk. Cheyennes under White Bull, Two Moons, and Hump also surrendered at about the same time. #4 The Subjugation of Lame Deer--in the spring of 1877 a campaign to capture a band of Souux under Lame Deer was begun. General Miles' was aided in this endeavor by the cooperation of some of the Sioux and Cheyenne chiefs who had surrendered in the Crazy Horse campaign-- #5 Chief Joseph and The Nez Perces-- This account records all the activity involved in contacting, and capturing Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce. This long account covers the entire process with many, many details-- #6 Further Conflict with the Sioux--Sitting Bull Surrenders-- describes incidents in detail that led to the ultimate surrender of Sitting Bull in July of 1881--#7-- the Capture of Geronimo and the Apaches-- This section describes the campaign in Arizona , New Mexico and northern Mexico to control the Apaches in the southwest in the summer of 1886. #8-- "The Messiah Disturbance"-- This section describes a widespread view among the Indians who felt that the time was right for an uprising and that a great leader would emerge. This disturbance ultimately resulted in the death of Sitting Bull in December 1890. Each of these separate eight campaigns is described meticulously, probably from official military records that were accessible to Major G W Baird . He included plenty of very pertinent data on exact dates when campaigns or engagements occurred, how many dead or wounded--white or Indian participants resulted, meteorological data, plenty of geographical and topographical information, and more. Overall this is a very comprehensive fact filled historical document, admittedly sad in retrospect because essentially these campaigns totally changed every Indian's life in the West. Baird ,in most of the article recounts just the facts, but in his conclusion he sadly admits the cause of much of the conflict was the blundering, blustering whiteman's. Also included in this article are 8 nicely engraved illustrations most of which were done by Frederic Remington including---Portrait of General Nelson A.
