In this year, the primary mint of the United States coined only 1,037,245 Morgan dollars. It contained a small quantity-less than one bag-of 1892-P dollars. Thus, this date was only a small portion of the 407,596 dollars in that hoard.The typical 1892-P dollar received a worse than average strike, with a number of pieces being very poorly struck. This is noticeable in the center of the piece on both surfaces. Boldly struck examples are not rare, but should be considered scarce. The brilliance is below par, but not bad enough to be called dull. Bagmarks are heavy for the issue, but pieces can be located occasionally with minor damage only.Due to the melting accomplished under the Pittman Act ((1918) and due to wide initial circulation, the 1892-P dollar is not heavily represented by Mint State coins. Dealers estimate that 80% of the original issue was wiped out by melting and other loss, leaving a residue of about 250,000 coins. They have further estimated that 5% of these are in mint condition. Because of the poor mix of strike, luster, and bagmark characteristics, only 20% of the Mint State coins can be classified as MS-65. This creates a problem in locating gems, which are scarce.Prooflike 1892-P dollars do exist, but only in very small quantities. On the unusual occasion that these coins are encountered at coin shows, they are usually brilliant prooflike pieces which are not well struck. The cost can be four to five times the MS-65 coin.(Information contained above is from James B. Morgan, who had been a pupil of Wyon in the Royal Mint in London. His initial M is found at the base of the neck by the last lock of hair on the obverse, and on the reverse on the left most loop of the ribbon.
