1892-1893 WORLD GLOBE DOLLAR FROM THE WORLD'S COLUMBIAN EXPOSTION So-Called Dollar HK-174, Certified & Graded by NGC, Mint State MS-61 You are bidding on a mint state example of the 1892-93 World Globe Dollar from the World's Columbian Exposition (also known as the Chicago World's Fair). This medal is featured in Hibler & Kappen's reference book, "So-Called Dollars", and was assigned the catalog number HK-174. It has a rarity index of R-3, meaning only pieces are known to exist. It is also listed as Eglit-9, in Nathan Eglit's book, "Columbiana: The Medallic History of Christopher Columbus and the Columbian Exposition of 1893". These medals were sold as souvenirs at the World's Columbian Exposition, held in Chicago from 1892-1893 to commemorate the 400th Anniversary of Columbus' discovery of America. This large so-called dollar is 44mm in diameter, and is composed of aluminum (which was considered a "precious" medal in 1893). The obverse is an aerial view of the buildings and grounds of the Exposition, superimposed on a globe. The reverse depicts the "Landing of Columbus" in the New World, also on a globe. This medal has been certified and graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation, and was awarded the Mint State grade of MS-61.
