This framed copper plaque is from the 1893Columbian Expo. It depicts Columbus landing in Americasurrounded by his sailors, soldiers, a priest and Indian. The border shows four larger emblems of exploration and trades such as an Indian canoe, a modern sailing war ship, and emblems of industry and agriculture linked by garlands of flowers. The work is highly raised embossing in copper sheeting. There are at least two layers set into the original wood frame. Part of the background has been very lightly buffed may years ago to add highlights; all original dark patina otherwise. Frame is 12x10”; image area is 10½ X 8¾. Although not marked Worlds Fair, this is typical of the popular patriotic items sold in 1892-1893 celebrating the 400 th anniversary of the discovery of America.
