A Rare Promotional Brochure for Escorted Tours by Railroad & with Accomodations from Boston to the 1893 CHICAGO WORLD'S FAIR Mecca Hotel Railway / Railroad "Read the within Circular carefully!" LOUIE J. HARRIS' GRAND WORLD'S FAIR "SEVENTY-FIVE DOLLAR" TOURS ILLUSTRATED PROMOTIONAL BROCHURE. Single sheet, 25 1/2 " x 8 1/2 ", folded 3 times vertically, creating a 6 3/8 " x 8 1/2 " brochure in 'accordion' format; printed on all 8 sides; 3 half-tone illustrations CONDITION: A small tear exhibits on the left outer fold which also affects the third fold; a small stain to front exterior panel; smudges to same; a bit of weathering along edges, else clean and presentable. A solid specimen of a rare item. Louie J. Harris announced his excursion tour as being for the rich and the poor, although I doubt any truly indigent persons or families could afford to spend $75.00 on such a vacation. All expenses were included personally conducted parties that travelled in special trains of Pullman Vestibuled Sleeping Cars ...each train was accompanied by a conductor a chaperon and a ladies' maid. Special arrangements could be made with Societies, Clubs, Schools, and etc. All of this was run from the Globe Building on Washington Street in Boston. Harris advertised a variety of routes: The Hoosac Tunnel Route .... Starting in Boston, stopping at North Adams for dinner at the Wilson House.... through to Niagara Falls w breakfast would be taken. Time was given in Niagara to view the falls. Leaving the Falls across the Suspension Bridge, into Canada and thence to Detroit for dinner at the Biddle House. and thence to Chicago. Via North Conway, Fabyans and Niagara Falls .... Leaving Boston in the morning, stopping at North Conway for dinner .... through White Mountain Notch on the Maine Central Railroad. (grand and impressive scenery - tremendous cliffs!) ... on through northern New Hampshire and Vermont, travelling through New York along Lake Ontario arriving at Windsor Beach for breakfast. thence Niagara Falls for dinner (view the cataract!) then along the Grand Trunk Railway and the Province of Ontario, stop in London for supper, thence through "prosperous cities and thriving villages" of Michigan and thence into to Chicago. Poughkeepsie Bridge Route ...Leaves Boston in the evening and "speeds" across Massachusetts in the night across the Poughkeepsie Bridge, traversing a corner of New York and arrive in Philadelphia for Breakfast. Thence on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad across Pennsylvania to Washington, D. C.! Thence westward through Harper's Ferry, Shenandoah Junction, Cumberland, Deer Park ... sweeping through West Virginia into Ohio with a stop at Zanesville for Breakfast, a stop at Columbus for dinner, then speeding across Indiana and into Illinois, arriving in Chicago in the evening. In Chicago , aside from the World's Fair, the destination for the weary travellers was the grand Mecca Hotel. Harris has three impressive half-tone views of the Mecca Hotel. the Ladies' Lounge looks spectacular. It seems the weary travellers have found a mecca indeed! The Mecca Hotel was on the block, bordered by Thirty-fourth, Dearborn and State Streets. This is a really nifty item. t are very few of these left floating around out in the world.
