I learned so much about the 1893 World's Fair through this book. It was written by an unknown author who describes her visit to the fair with her 2 children Madeline and James. The mother and children first go through the Toy exhibit w Punch and Judy are putting on a stage play. T were 1 or 2 dolls that were fitted with Edisons Phonograph and they were able to say "mamma" and "papa". T is a wonderful lithograph describing the sections they visit. T are also in text sephia toned drawings. Each ethnic group represented has a lithograph and the story in the mothers words. T are 3 sections that I found most interesting. In the "Chinese, Indian or Annam" tent the men were smoking Opium and were half asleep. T are some very racial comments made in this child's book, certainly nothing that would be acceptable in todays society. When the mother takes her children to the Court Of Algeria a little Black child came running forward and James asked "What is It, mamma?" Her reply is "Only a polite African offering...treats......"Look at his black face and hands and his white teeth gleaming through his thick lips..." When visting the Indians she calls them "redskins" and states that the children had always fancied the Japanese as savages, but was persuaded differently after visiting their section. In another section a South American Black child read more
