You are bidding on an ORIGINAL D. W. BRUNTON's POCKET TRANSIT COMPASS COMPLETE WITH THE ORIGINAL HEAVY LEATHER STORAGE CASE WITH BELT LOOP. Our research tells us that this compass is considered to be the 'Holy Grail' of antique compasses... we guarantee this to be an original and genuine antique compass and not a reproduction ...we'll let you decide, by your bidding, if the 'Holy Grail' sobriquet is accurate. Used up until the early 1900s for geological surveying, this original survivor is marked with serial number 11832 at the base of the top cover as well as on the lip surround of the compass' face. Made from aluminum with brass hinge hardware, the top cover reads as follows... D. W. BRUNTON'S. Pat. Sept. 18, 1894. Apr. 14, 1914. Wm. AINSWORTH & SONS. Sole Manufacturers. Pat. Oct. 22, (19)12. May 27 (19)13. Denver, Colo. U.S.A. Other Pats. Pndg. 11832. The compass is of the quadrant variety displaying 0-90 degrees. Perfect working order. No nicks, chips or cracks to the mirror which does exhibit the slightest silvering loss along the extreme edges. Measures 3 inches on the diagonal and, when opened, 4 inches tall. T are two bubble levels both of which work perfectly. The aluminum housing is original and shows no signs of having been polished or cleaned. The full leather storage case is completely intact...the snap lock works...t are no rips or tears...t is drying, cracking and crazing, specifically around the snap closure as is consistent with great age and fine leather wear patterns. The original owner's name was written, in ink, just above the snap lock closure on the storage case. The majority of the written in ink name is hidden by the remnants of a paper label displaying the same information. We're pleased to offer this very rare Central Florida estate find with absolutely NO RESERVE. Buyer to pay $9 s/h. |
