After collecting Labor Memorabilia for nearly 40 years, I have decided to sell-off my collection of about 5500 Labor Union, Cause & Political items. Many of these items have never appeared on ebay or for that matter, on any other venues selling historical pieces. Some of the pieces go back to the year of 1834 and others are from the Knights of Labor, Western Federation of Labor, IWW and other labor organizations of the late 19th century. T are Parade Badges, Pins, Convention Badges, Ribbons, Caps & Hats, 3-D items, Plates, Paper, Books, Signs & Posters of practically every union which ever existed including noted Labor leaders of the century. Most of the items are in Nice, Great, Excellent, Near-Mint, Mint and Minty-Mint Condition and also, many are Rare, Very Rare and Extremely Rare pieces.

One of the items is an 1894ca, Extremely Rare "CIGAR MAKERS INTERNATIONAL UNION of AMERICA(CMIUA) - LOCAL UNION No. 161 - DENVER, PA." badge. This 2.875 " x 9.5 " badge with a blue ribbon and gold lettering is in Excellent Condition for being over 114 years old. The badge has a UNION BUG[stamp] on a paper between the front and the reverse ribbons. (T is a very small insect hole on the left-middle side of the face ribbon which does not detract from the overall appearance of the badge). (This is mentioned for accuracy purposes only). The paper between the ribbons show the manufacturer as the "Ed. DeMoulin Bros. of Greevile Illinois". The hanger has a celluloid insert with the traditional "Hand In Hand" clasp. The hanging two gold-tone tassels and hanging fringe still have the original luster of when the badge was manufactured. The lettering on both sides is very crisp and sharp!

This badge was worn by a proud union member to Union Conventions and in Labor Day parades. It was also worn in fraternal and social activities of the local union. The badge was reversed to the black silk ribbon with silver lettering when worn to a wake or funeral of a departed local union member. An Extremely Rare badge to add to a CMIUA collection or a Labor Union collection or an AFL collection.

Brief History - Cigar Makers International Union(CMIUA)

The Cigar Makers International Union of America was formed in 1864 as the Cigar Makers National Union of the United States and became an international union in 1867 with the affiliation of Canadian locals. Samuel Gompers was instrumental in the growth of the union. Gompers served as Vice-president of the CMIU from 1886 to 1924 as well as serving as President of the American Federation of Labor(AFL) from 1886 to 1924. The union merged with the Retail, Wholesale, and Department Store Workers Union in 1974.
