For sale is volume IV of what appears to be a 12 volume set. The book title is Naturgeschichte der Vögel Mitteleuropas. Neubearbeitet von G. Berg, R. Blasius a.( many others). Hrsg. von Carl R. Heinicke. III. Band. (Lerchen, Stelzen, Waldsänger und Finkenvögel). Mit 48 Chromotafeln. The book measures 12.5 x 15.5 inches and is quite heavy. It has 48 large bright color plates of birds in their natural surroundings, some of which are pictured. Some are on ebay for $15 $40 each. Spotted foxing throughout, mostly at the front of the book, although it affects the text pages more than the plates. Text is all in german.The most extensive German work on birds of Central Europe (and far beyond) and a great classic in German ornithology with fine chromolithographed plates after Keulemans, Kleinschmidt and von Riesenthal. The "new edition" was edited by Carl Hennicke and contains contributions by 36 European ornithologists, among them Hartert, Keulemans, and Rothschild. "Altogether it forms the most complete and best illustrated of any treatise on the birds of Central Europe." (Wood). The work includes common, rare, and even unlikely birds such as albatrosses, of which several species are recorded from the North Atlantic.
