Album Album Album Album Album Album Album Album Album Album Album History of the Unites States of America, From the Discovery of the Continent 6 Volume Edition By George Bancroft You are invited to submit bids on an increasingly hard-to-find 6-volume edition of George Bancroft’s classic early history of the United States under the full title, “ History of the United States of America, From The Discovery of the Continent, The Author’s Last Revision ” as published in New York by D. Appleton And Company in 1895 and 1896. All 6 volumes are hardbound in full leather with 5 gilt-enhanced raised bands on the spine along with dark brown title blocks with gilt lettering, gilt decorations on the edges of the boards, marbled page edges, and marbled page edges. The size of each of the volumes is 6” wide by 8 ½” tall. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: George Bancroft was born in Worcester, Massachusetts on October 3, 1800 and ultimately became a historian of considerable note. He is sometimes confused with another contemporary historian, Hubert Howe Bancroft, who was the complier of another significant history – that of the Pacific states. A graduate of Harvard University, George Bancroft acquired his doctorate in Europe and spent considerable time travelling in Great Britain and central Europe before returning to the United States to tutor Greek at Harvard. Over the period of 1834 to 1840 he completed the first three volumes of his History of the US. After another stint in Great Britain and Europe in the 1840s in a diplomatic capacity, he had unusual unrestricted access to several historical archives in libraries and governmental offices. He took advantage of this opportunity to compile reference material for his History. He returned to the US and completed volumes 4, 5 and 6 of his History over the period of 1852 to 1854. Over the period of 1858 to 1874, Bancroft completed four more volumes of this history resulting in a work consisting of 10 volumes. In 1884-85 he published a 6-volume revised version of his History of the United States – The Author’s Last Revision, which is the edition featured Historians and history educators will want to add this monumental work to their collection.
