This week we will be listing quite a few choice items from old Illinois and Ohio estates, so please click on our other auctions. We gladly combine multiple purchases in one box to save our customers excessive freight charges. This auction represents the best of the best . . . a Victorian 15-piece hand-painted Limoges fish service set comprised of 12 plates, 1 platter, 1 sauce or gravy boat and 1 underplate. Each piece carries the same factory mark, an 'AK' over 'D" over FRANCE in green ink under glaze. The "Collector's Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain", 3rd Edition by Gaston dates this mark to circa 1890s-1910 and attributes it to the Klingenberg / Dwenger Studio. Eleven of the twelve plates are signed by the artist NYE, as is the platter. The sauce boat is signed on the underplate, but not on the boat itself. Nye really displayed his talent and imagination when he created this set. Not only are all 15 pieces painted with a different scene, but all are also embellished with detailed underwater seascapes. In addition he has painted horizontal, 3 dimentional white lines to make the fish look like they really are swimming in water! Note also the artist's use of coral pink and seafoam green in the backgrounds of the plates as well as on the inside of the sauce boat and the underside of the platter. So much thought was put into the painting of this set that he even painted a different scene on the opposite side of the sauce boat! (Enlarge our photos to see all the great detail!) The platter measures 24" x 9" and the plates each measure 8-1/2" in diameter. It's remarkable that these pieces have survived the last 110 years in this condition! 14 of the 15 pieces are mint! Only one of the 8-1/2" plates has an under-glaze tight hairline radiating from the center of the plate, but not going beyond the foot. I tried to take a photo of the area, but could not capture it on film. You can view this plate in our first photo. It's the one on the extreme right that is sitting on a plate stand. Other than that one plate, the set has experienced no wear and tear! T are absolutely no chips or flea bites and the gold trim is 99.99% undisturbed. Only on the very outer edges of the platter's handles do I see any loss of gold, and even then it's not much, but we like to mention every little detail. All considered, this is a magnificent set combining professional artistry with quality antique Limoges porcelain in excellent condition! A comparable set could not easily be found. For more quality and the unusual, please be certain to visit our other auctions, a portion of which are listed : A magnificent Victorian silver-plated humidor; more choice sterling pieces; an 18K gold ladies pocket watch (marked "Nickel" & "Remontoir"); a stunning English writing slope / desk; a blue Roseville jardiniere in the Pine Cone pattern; a Candlewick covered punch bowl with ladle; a number of rare 19th Century books on Native American Indians & American History; and an 1800s Washoe papoose. SHIPPING: Buyer pays USPS Priority Mail shipping within U.S. (estimated at 24# when well packed in one oversized box), PLUS INSURANCE from zip 60012 with delivery confirmation. IMPORTANT: We strongly suggest the set be shipped in two or three smaller boxes, so we'd like to discuss this option with the high bidder at auction's end. If the set is shipped in more than one box, the freight charges shown on ebay's automated invoice will have to be amended. Also, oversized box surcharges will then be avoided. Sorry, no overseas bidders for this auction. Canadian bidders, please contact me before bidding. . BID WITH CONFIDENCE! WE GUARANTEE OUR MERCHANDISE AS DESCRIBED. We have been in the antiques business for 28 years and are members of the Antiques & Collectibles Dealers Assn., the New England Appraisers Assn. and the Wisconsin Antique Dealers Assn. - organizations focusing on honesty an...
