1896 EDITION: THE JUNGLE BOOK by RUDYARD KIPLING 4th reprint of 1st edition Hardback book 7.5 inches by 5.25 inchesDark blue covers with embossed gold decoration.Illustrated with black and white line drawings by J.L. Kipling, W.H. Drake & P. Frenzeny.The long page edges are heavily gilded. First published by Macmillan & Co in 1894; this fourth reprint 1896 The cloth spine is faded with edge tears at the top and bottom and a long split where it meets the back cover.There is an indistinct Scarborough retailer's label inside the front cover.The name Malcolm Rowntree is written on one of the following blank pages (the Rowntrees were a well known Quaker family in Scarborough & York) The tissue which protects the frontispiece is very foxed, and there are fox marks scattered throughout the book. The dark endpapers have separated, probably caused by its young reader bending the covers back. The book is a little loose in the binding, but all of the pages are firmly fixed. The corners of the covers are worn. Not a pristine volume, but a nice early edition of this classic book.
