Inside, double page engraving shows WILLIAM McKINLEY at his home in Canton, OHIO giving an address to an adoring crowd, supporting his candidacy for the Presidency in the election of 1896. Interestingly, t is a portrait of a BLACK MAN standing admiringly directly in front of McKinley, an unusual thing to see in 1896 during the days of RACIAL SEGREGATION and JIM CROW laws. This might have been done to garner the Negro vote for McKinley in states w Blacks were allowed to vote. The Illustrated American was a weekly newspaper / news magazine, somewhat similar to Harper's Weekly (in that it has MANY MANY photos and engravings) and similar to the news magazines Time or Newsweek of today in that it is filled with contemporary news reports, news analysis, detailed essays on various subjects and topics, sports, fashions, women's issues, opinions, short fictional stories, and much more.
