Up for auction is a beautiful 19th century edition of the complete two volume set of Jane Austen's first major work, SENSE and SENSIBILITY . Published by J.M. Dent in London in 1896. 163pp; 218pp. This edition of Sense and Sensibility was originally part of a ten-volume set of Austen's six novels, edited by Reginald Brimley Johnson, all uniformly bound in light blue-green and white cloth with gold-stamped insiginia surrounding title at upper left, and facsimile signature of Austen at bottom right of front cover. Ornate gold-stamped title and decoration on spine; top page edge brightly gilded. These were the first and second volumes in the entire set, as well as the first and second volumes of Sense and Sensibility . Both volumes bear identical bookplates of the same former owner. Intact and attractive frontispiece engraving of Jane Austen as a young woman in the first volume, holding a parasol, as well as other illustrations in both volumes depicting scenes from the novel. Books are exceptionally clean inside, with no foxing and intact tissue guard prior to frontispiece. Overall in Very Good Plus condition. A scarce example of this Austen classic, her first full-length novel from a scarce set of Austen's novels, which were edited by Johnson with consultation with Austen's grand-nephew, the Reverend A.
