1897-O
This New Orleans dollar was already considered as a “better date” coin in the early 1960s when the U.S. Treasury released hundreds of bags of O-type dollars from its hoard. Prices fell for all New Orleans dollar coins, but the 1897-O issue weatd the storm better than most. Its Mint State price fell less than 15%, and then immediately rebounded.
The 1897-O coin is usually found poorly struck, with average-to-heavy bagmarks, and a color and luster which leaves a lot of room for improvement. The strike is significantly better than that found on the 1891-O and 1892-O coins, but it probably is on a par with the 1896-O date. Many experts feel that typical examples from the 1896-O and 1897-O issues would be identical twins with regard to all primary visual characteristics. In truth, the 1896-O coin is slightly less attractive
This date was heavily melted in the 20th century. It is probably that as much as 75% of the original issue did not survive the great melting programs. Coin dealers estimate that only one percent of the 1897-O coins seen today are in mint condition. Because of the quality problems associated with luster, strike, and abrasions, only 5% of these qualify as MS-65 specimens. A substantial number of coins are advertised as MS-65 pieces, but they are usually, at best, MS-60+. It can be inferred from this information that gem coins exist, but in very limited quantities. Because of the brief circulation experienced by many coins, a large AU population exists. Dealers will sometimes attempt to sell these coins as MS-60 or MS-65, with the explanation abut very poor strike being consistent with this issue. Beware.
The 1897-O is rare in prooflike condition. A few have been seen over the past five years which were surprisingly well struck. All carried light surface abrasions and above average mint luster. The typical price is 85% more than the price of MS-65 specimens.

Morgan Dollars are a favorite of collectors everyw Authorized by the Bland-Allison Act of 1878, the dollars were designed by George T. Morgan, who had been a pupil of Wyon in the Royal Mint in London. His initial M is found at the base of the neck by the last lock of hair on the obverse, and on the reverse on the left most loop of the ribbon. They were made from 1878 to 1921, when the Peace dollar was adopted.
