In our opinion, this coin would be graded MS65This coin is Guaranteed to be Authentic!THE COIN PICTURED IS THE ACTUAL COIN YOU ARE BIDDING ON AND WILL RECEIVE!1897-SIn the 1930s, a Nevada farmer named LaVere Redfield stashed the tremendous quantity of 407,596 Morgan and Peace dollars into his farmhouse basement. He gathered these coins over a number of years from banks in the vicinity of his farm. When he died in 1974, this large private hoard was only a portion of his estate. The entire collection of coins was sold to a California coin dealer late in 1975, and they were subsequently distributed to the public at large beginning in 1976. Included in this collection was a reasonable large quantity of Mint State 1897-S dollars.Prior to the release of the Redfield coins, the 1897-S was already relatively plentiful in the Mint State grades and was simply a “better date” Morgan dollar. Today it is estimated that 10% of all existing specimens from this issue are in mint condition. Since the original output of almost six million pieces was heavily melted, it is felt that the 10% referenced above represents about 50,000 pieces. Over half of these uncirculated coins fall into the quality category of MS-65 or better. This is due in part to a better than average strike, which was probably the best one at the San Francisco mint between the years 1892 and 1900. The luster is generally very good, and surface abrasions run in an acceptable range from average to few. Due to this favorable combination of characteristics, MS-65+ gems are relatively commonAs a prooflike coin, thee 1897-S issue is easy for the collector to find. Almost all pieces in this category are high quality cameos with deep mirrors and frosty devices. It is normal to find these coins with average bagmarks. Cameos carry a 25% price premium above the equivalent MS-65 regular coin.(Information contained above is from James B. Morgan, who had been a pupil of Wyon in the Royal Mint in London. His initial M is found at the base of the neck by the last lock of hair on the obverse, and on the reverse on the left most loop of the ribbon.
