Some of the rarest and most desirable college football programs are those from the 1890s between California and Stanford for the Big Game. Offered here is a program from the 1898 contest which was played at Recreation Park in San Francisco on Thanksgiving Day. This very rare program is 48 numbered pages plus the front and back cover. Inside are great pictures of individual players, coaches, team pictures, and game action shots. There are also various articles and discussions regarding football, scoring section, history of previous Cal/Stanford games along with great vintage advertising. The cover of the program is an artwork all its own. The elaborate cover with gold raised lettering was printed separately on thick stock and then attached to the rest of the program with string binding that is still intact. The program technically grades in near EX condition. The front cover has some fine creasing on the top half. On the back cover there are some vertical creases that run the length of the cover. Please note that this creasing only impacts the covers. The interior pages are in amazing ex-mt condition. The binding of the program is 100% intact with no splitting. If it was not for the creasing previously mentioned this program would grade EX-MT. You would be hard pressed to find an example in better condition. This lot also includes the ticket stub for this game. The ticket measures approximately 4.75 inches by 2.25 inches. It is in amazing ex/mt condition. It has great graphics with raised lettering and graphics on the left side. On the back of the ticket written in ink is “Compliments of F. L. Berry Mgr.” indicating the team manager gave this ticket to the original owner. This program and ticket came from a collection of 1890s Cal/Stanford items I bought about a 2 years ago that came from an estate of a Cal alumni and are fresh to the hobby.
