Very interesting postal cover (content no longer present) franked with US 2c Trans-Mississippi commemorative postage stamp, issued to promote the expo, tied Exposition Station/ Omaha, Nebraska, Jul 12 1898, postmark at the post office on the grounds of the Trans Mississippi and International Exposition World's Fair, Omaha, Nebraska, Jun 1-Nov 1 1898; note printed cover card for Pope Manufacturing Company/ Columbia and Hartford Bicycles/ Space No. 214 Transportation Building/ Trans-Mississippi and International Exposition/ Omaha, Nebraska at upper left; (reverse) Hartford, Connecticut, Jul 22 1898, flag machine cancel backstamp. This World's Fair, which was solely devoted to commerce, on a venue of some 180 acres, was opened with the intention of fostering interest in and the development of resources in the American states west of the Mississippi River. Exhibits included art, products and crafts from the region, with emphasis on agriculture, ranching and mining. Shortly after the expo commenced, Congress declared war on Spain, which coupled with the city's relative isolation at the time, contributed to sparse attendence. Fortunately, Omaha being located on the main Union Pacific transcontinental railroad line, probably partially offset the necessary lack of visitors. Just fine condition, tear in right backflap tip, rough opening at top right edge, not affecting stamp. *** We have been in the paper Americana and postal history businesses since 1953 and are members of the Manuscript and Ephemera Societies as well as the American Stamp Dealers Association, American Philatelic Society, Canadian Stamp Dealers Association (Canada), Philatelic Traders Society (Great Britain) and numerous other collector organizations.
