They minted 12,290,000 pieces, while the Philadelphia mint produced only 330,846 coins, and San Francisco busied itself making 2,562,000 coins. The most positive characteristic of the 1899-O dollar is its fully lustrous appearance.The typical strike encountered in Mint State coins is a bold one. This issue is probably the best strike produced in New Orleans for Morgan dollars. Unfortunately, a number of pieces also exist weakly struck. This appears to have occurred on approximately one-fourth of the coins. Bagmarks tend to be minimal.All grades of Mint State coins are available. Even MS-65+ gems can be easily obtained. There can be no doubt that many thousands of 1899-O coins were released by the U.S. Treasury in the “great silver dollar rush” of the early 1960s. Dealers estimate that in excess of 30% of all known 1899-O dollars are in mint condition. Because of the high quality of most Mint State coins, their reasonable price, and their overall attractiveness, this issue is among the first dates acquired by new collectors.Prooflike pieces are not as common as might be expected. They are generally available, but only in small quantities and at infrequent intervals. The usual piece found is a cameo, with excellent contrast between the devices and the fields. The price of a cameo is generally three times greater than the MS-65 coin.(Information contained above is from James B. Morgan, who had been a pupil of Wyon in the Royal Mint in London. His initial M is found at the base of the neck by the last lock of hair on the obverse, and on the reverse on the left most loop of the ribbon.
