This lot is a Large size, $1 Blue Seal Series of 1899 Silver Certificate . Also known as a Black Eagle. It has a large blue seal and has been used in commerce. In addition to the Eagle with his wings spread, the front also shows a US flag, the Capitol Building, and Presidents Abraham Lincoln and U.S. Grant. The note says that one silver dollar is deposited in the Treasury and is available upon demand! These large notes are known as 'Horseblankets' because of their large size. This one bears the signatures of Elliot (Register) and Frank White (US Treasurer). Freidburg catalog No. F 235. Size: over 3" x 7" Act of Aug. 1886. Condition: Used in commerce with a pinhole, edge wear and dirt from use. The back is printed in green ink and says Silver Certificate several times and United States of America. 1899 Four consecutive days during the winter of 1899 brought extreme harsh conditions to North America. Known as “The Great Cold Wave”, many record-setting low temperatures which were set still hold to this day in many cities. On February 14, Tallahassee, Florida saw temperatures as cold as -2°F. This is still the coldest temperature ever recorded in Florida. Other locations that saw rare low temperatures include Dallas, Texas at -10°F, Kansas City, Missouri at -22°F, and Scottsbluff, Nebraska at -45°F. All records which still stand. read more
