In the year 1920 and moving forward on into the Great Depression era, the sale of diamond engagement rings was fast declining. And why not, DeBeers was controlling diamond prices, and people needed an alternative. So was born the beautiful sapphire engagement ring! You are viewing a most beautiful 1920s genuine sapphire and diamond engagement ring. Of course, it does not HAVE to be an engagement ring--it doesn't have the look of a "bridesmaid's gown" or anything--you could wear this as a right hand ring very easily. But frankly, that's what it was--an engagement ring. We received it from an estate, and it was worn as a symbol of love for many many years. The sapphire is a square cut and is of very fine quality--the blue is very translucent and unfortunately these photos show it to be much darker than it is. It has virtually no surface abrasion and just a tiny bit of abrasion on one edge, but you have to look with high magnification to even notice it. It is an exceptionally nice sapphire measuring 6 x 6mm or approximately 1.5 carats. Flanking the sapphire on both sides is a cluster of three of the most fiery diamonds you'd ever want to see. These are E color, VS-1 clarity. This guy obviously wanted the best for his lady. The diamonds are all old cuts--2 are mine cuts and the others are old European cuts. They are about 2.5mm round
