Back in the day before commercial ribbon, string, and zippers people used tape looms to make what was called "tape". Made in different widths, it could have been used to lace up a dress, boot or shoes, as a drawstring for pants and petticoats along with many household uses. Tape looms were a household item that were often given as gifts. I have been fascinated with these for years and have a small collection of them. They are extremely difficult to find and are usually seen in museums. I have decided to part with a few of these due to the fact that we have a child in college. Need I say more? I acquired this particular tape loom about 8 yrs. ago at an upscale estate auction held by a reputable auctioneer. The estate was in Doylestown, PA which is the county seat of Bucks County, Pennsylvania w I live. It was a lovely 1800's home filled to the brim with family collections from the beginning of their family's occupancy of the house. The current owner/family member was on site and I spoke to him about this loom in addition to another one that I bought from the same auction. This loom is an 18th century, dated 1798 authentic piece. He indicated that it was from Lancaster County, however I have no documentation saying that and it does not say that on the loom. Perhaps an expert would know by the style of the decoration so I wanted to mention it since I was told that by the owner. Sooo, now to the description. Measures approx 22" long by 10 1/2" at its widest and 5/8" thick. Starting at the top and going down: The top is arched with a bonnet top. T is a hole for hanging center front with a punched shield shape around it. T is punched decoration all around the border of the shaped top portion of the front. T is a punched date of 1798 with a punched diamond shape between 17 and 98. T is an open square with punched decoration bordering it. Below the square we have a punched monogram: W S B with the S being larger than the W and B. T are also a trio of decorative punched dots between the letters. Below that t are 28 what I would call tines (straight separated pieces with a hole punched through each one to weave the tape.) The front has some wear and dark (burn?) marks. You can also feel the irregularity of the wood. In remarkable condition for the date but with a wonderful aged patina that you get with pieces this old. The reverse has some wear at the top that I suspect may have something to do with how it was used . Back has one modern scratch (1") across 3 of the lower tines. In researching this when I bought it, the bonnet top shape may be utilitarian. I saw references that have the loom held between the knees for weaving. Obviously a well made and cared for piece of antique folk art. This has been hanging out of the light on a wall in my smoke free home since I acquired it. Great primitive decoration with a date on it! I will securely pack and ship this out to you at NO CHARGE. The method chosen will depend on w you live. I ship out fast (within 24-48 hrs. after payment is received.) I am a reputable seller (see my feedback). Insurance, which I must require, will be at the BUYER'S EXPENSE. I will consider a local pickup only after the purchase price is paid and cleared. Please Note: This is a 10 day auction. So, I hope that I have given you enough information. Please feel free to ask any questions and look at the photos. HAPPY BIDDING!!
