RARE Burl Bowl Native American Album Album Album This unusual burl bowl has special appeal to collectors of burl due to its natural scalloped shape. It appears that it was taken from available burl despite the fact that a portion of the surface on the inside does not have the usual burl surface (the outside does). I am convinced it is not a settler's bowl due to the fact that it was not turned and utilizes what nature provided - an imperfect yet perfectly useful burl. It would be from the Northest Woodlands. The bowl is heavy on the bottom and thins towards the top, especially in the "non-burl" portion, which is lower that the rest of the inside. The scalloped shape results from the size of the burl that could be worked, and is not damage. T are literally thousands of knife marks on the inside, and a portion of the inside is darkened, evidencing continuous use for a very long time. That plus the shape clearly places the bowl very early, undoubtedly in the 18th c. Size is 15 1/2" long and 12 1/2" at its widest point. The surface is old and shiney (as the light reflects in the pictures) and has a silky feel to it on the outside. T is one chip and an associated small hairline and another small hairline.
