18th C. Secretaire a Guillotine Louis XVI

This rare and elegant secretary is an original Louis XVI piece, original finish and in excellent condition, circa late 1700's. The wood is African mahogany with a bird's eye graining pattern on the front and flame and straight grain on the sides. The top cabinet with the original mercury glass mirrored doors contribute to the naming of this model of secretary ' guillotine'. The quality of the construction is excellent: interior of drawers finished (bottom of drawers are in oak), intricate dovetailing of the drawers, extra marquetry pattern paneling of the drop front desk are (interior) and thick leaf placage, not thin veneer; original lock, all hardware is of the period, a key is included. The legs and 'pain coupe' corners are finely detailed, the corners feature cannelure and the top is accented by a flat projecting cornice with carved linear detailing. The drop down desk top has a small black leather writing area accented by a gold leaf border. The interior has drawers and pigeon holes, and the bottom of the secretary features three drawers, another unusual design element.
Dimensions: 85.67 inches high x 41.83 inches wide x 16.55 inches deep. Will ship from France. This piece was fabricated for the Chateau de Bouloire (Sarthe) during the Louis XVI époque and comes with a receipt of sale from the business manager of the chateau, representing Comtesse de Gerssac; the piece was sold away from the Chateau de Bouloire in 1938. Le secrétaire est Louis XVI d'époque, fin du XVIIIe siècle. Le bois est un acajou africain moucheté. Ce modèle est particulier et rare, surmonte d'un cabinet. La qualité de fabrication est excellente et original.( Hardware, clefs, serrures) le vernis est ancien (french polish). 3 tiroirs en bas, surmonte d'une porte abattant ouvrant sur un caisson comprenant 6 tiroirs. puis un tiroir, puis le cabinet qui est détachable du reste. (assemble par tenon-mortaise.) le cabinet contient 2 étagères (original) Les 2 montants avant et les 2 montants arrière sont cannelés sur toute la hauteur du meuble. le fond et les intérieurs de tiroirs sont en chêne. Il a été fabrique sur commande pour le château de Bouloire a l'époque. ( le secrétaire a été vendu en 1938 par la Comtesse de Gerssac. J'ai la facture de 1938.) Dimensions: 217 h x 106 lg x 42 p (cm).
