Hello. Today you are bidding on a ring dating from the mid to late 1700's, whose stone is either onyx or obsidian. Carved into its face in fine intaglio is a jawless human skull and the letters 'SVM ERIS' on the bottom and "IVS .SI" above the skull. I'm not positive about the uppermost letters as, like Alice had to read some poems in the looking glass, this had to be held to the mirror to be decipd as it is an 18th century personal seal and I found the topmost crest difficult to decipher. It seems to be a combination of numbers and Latin whose meaning, I am sorry to say, I am at a loss to provide for you. Some arcane and cheery message, no doubt, about death and the fleeting nature of life and how - if you seem to be enjoying yourself - you'd better get over it right quick and face the bleak reality that you are doomed to suffer a withering consumptive living decay of your mortal coil capped off with the cherry of death. (translation: get to Church and prostrate yourself in abject penitence for the lowly collective of slovenly sins that you claim as your life as quickly as possible) Or possibly not. Any information pointing towards what it might really mean would be most welcome. The ring itself is 14K gold, but unmarked and is a setting that post-dates the intaglio seal itself. I have no way to date the setting. An absolutely unique ring for the collector - beautifully morose. A US size 9 and in excellent condition in every way. Thanks very much for looking and good luck!
