18th. CENTURY COLONIAL REPRODUCTION SLANT FRONT DESK
Welcome to my auction! I am proud to be offering for your consideration this fabulous mahogany inlaid slant front desk. This piece was sold by and is labeled "The Mayflower Furniture Company" of West Newton and Woburn, Massachusetts. This piece was part of the "Treasure House" collection. It was a museum reproduction authorized by the Edison Institute in Dearborn, Michigan for the Colonial Mfg. Co. of Zeeland, Mich. This desk was purchased from a Boston area mansion. I'm sure it sold for several thousand dollars new. The desk is in very nice original condition but does show signs of usage. We are guessing it was made in the 1970's and consider it as very nice original condition. The desk has wonderful figural mahogany graining. It has an inlaid drop lid that rests on pull out slats on each side of desk. It has four graduated drawers, oak was used as a secondary wood. The drawers are dovetailed and a finish was applied to the inside of the drawers as well. The hardware is original, solid brass and all present. It has plank ends and a bracket base. THIS IS A VERY SPECIAL PIECE!!! The interior is very, very impressive and curvatious, with a double teir of curved front drawers and shaped dividers for the pigeon or cubby holes. Vertical rope turnings flank an arched and concaved door in the center. The interior would be great as described, but reach in to the cubby holes and pull a release on each side, and the whole center portion of the interior pulls out. Turn the center section around and you'll find a sliding door that opens to reveal several SECRET drawers. Very cool! This desk measures 37'' wide, 43" tall and 21 1/2"deep.
