Please note, we have a very large collection of additional images of this piece available for your enjoyment below. Description:This listing is for a Rare 18th Century George III English Chippendale Ball and Claw Upholstered Side Chair with Pierced Splat, probably circa 1760 (see similar example "British Antique Furniture" by John Andrews page 127, splat with variance from this example). It is a stunning piece with a crest fully carved with delightful waving form. Both ears along the crest curl backwards for a softer termination. Tassels start in the ears on either side and drop down subtly into the beginning of the pierced splat formation. This urn-form masterpiece is cut and carved from a single solid piece, not created with numerous pieces but actually formed by hand in a single piece. Intense carving continues throughout the entire splat, with small carve and cut marks still evident in the wood. Two curving fluted side rails join the crest with small pegs locking it together. Both rails are a single piece of wood that join the chair seat frame with pegs at the corners before dropping down to the ground as round legs and formed square stump rear feet. The frame is incredible, with a molded edge wrapping around the perimeter, with pegged joints at each knee. A slip seat drops carefully into the frame, fitting perfectly despite years of shrinking and expanding. The interior of the frame is marked with a V, noting it as the fifth chair in a set of dining chairs. Small original blocking still intact at the front, each are locked in with hand made nails. Carved knees over cabriole legs terminate in gorgeous ball and claw feet, each with incredible detail and strength evident throughout. The strained tenons, stretched skin, tight knuckles and sharp nails show the work of a master carver. This is a stuning and very stable piece for any serious collector of Chippendale antiques, particularly in this rare form and unique design. This is a piece you will treasure for a lifetime, with a deep patina and glowing finish that will certainly make it a strikepoint piece for any room. Measurements: 24" wide, 22" deep (at feet, deepest point), 37 1/4" high to crest, 18 1/2" high to seat. Condition: Visually Outstanding Condition - Right crest ear curl is missing, fully oxidized over. Back of shoe with loss, not destabalizing but is visually notable from the back ("shoe" is the piece at the back of the chair the bottom of the splat drops into). Repairs to back of side rails and splat, minor and non noteworthy. Scarring to apron along sides and back, fully oxidized - it appears that at an early point in the past an upholsterer upholstered over the frame, leaving small nail marks just above the carved apron. Left rear foot with very minor loss to corner, fully oxidized and smoothed over the years. Ball and claw feet missing nails on front two talons; rear talons have full claws - this could be the way it was designed, with a flatter lying ball for better balance, or the foot may have been shortened by just a bit. Upholstery is not original and has a minor dark mark on the left side center. Please see photos below for full disclosure of condition and condition report.
