A completely outstanding oil painting by Jean Baptiste Le Brun 1748 to 1813. Titled ' Sleeping Venus surprised by Satyrs' Condition = Very good, a light clean would vastly improve this fabulous oil painting. Framed in an 18th century frame. Circa = 1790. What a find a real sleeper. Signed = I can not be sure if the red squiggle below the rope is his signature? Provence = Labelled verso, and on the frame, some interesting history. Owned by The Hon Mrs H.Haicke of Pemberton. [See photographs below]. Artists Biography Jean Baptiste Le Brun 1748 to 1813, was a painter in oils and a art dealer, he was brought up in Paris and lived for some time at the Hotel de Lubert, it was here that he met his future wife the beautiful Louis Vigee portrait painter 1755-1842. Le Brun married Louis in January 1776, they had a daughter born in 1780. Le Brun's reputation as a artist reaches new heights when he exhibits at a Paris salon his work is much praised and sells well, but the bulk of his income comes from his art dealing and his hotel which he names Le Brun. He toured Holland and Flanders in 1781. During the French revolution Le Brun divorces his wife as she is considered a traitor to the new government, through her friendship of Queen Marie Antoinette, he did this to protect his property, which the new revolutionary government want to read more
