Size: About 1/2 inch in diameter.Condition: Very good to excellent for a button made in the 1700's. Comments: There is an extensive write up on Repoussé buttons in The Big Book of Buttons on page 311. This particular button is not shown in their pictures, but picture number 23 on page 310 does show a bone back. At that time, in the 1700's, the bone back was referred to as a "mold" through which 4 holes were drilled and strung with 2 strands of catgut. The catgut and back of the bone mold were then covered with a resinous cement, which acted as a filler and secured the parts--bone and catgut. The metal cap is brass--I had one checked and it is 85% copper and 15% zinc with a few minor trace amounts of other metals. The Repoussé name comes from either stamping the back resulting in the relief on the face surface or by hand forming the relief surface from the back using hand tools and a hammer. Repoussés come with 2 other backs, wood and fibers and I will be listing both in the future. Shipping and handling: I do combine shipments and adjust the shipping and handling fee accordingly. If you wish to take advantage of combined shipping, please hold your payment until I have sent you a combined invoice. I won't always know when you have finished bidding, so you may have to request an invoice to let me know that you are ready to pay. You read more
