ABSOLUTELY AMAZING silk and linen wedding shoes from 1773! Tiny linen shoes with ivory silk, Louis XIV heels, flaps for buckles, and name and date of original owner written on the sole of what appears to be the right shoe. Covered timber heel and leather lasts. The name on the shoe is written in black ink. Unfortunately, part of the name has been obscured and reads either "Ms./Mrs. Jones/Toms/Tomas Wedding Shoe", and in lighter ink or graphite reads "worn in 1773-". The linen body of both shoes are in almost perfect condition for their age, as well as the linen covering each heel. The silk has started to rip and fray, but is still amazingly intact in some places. The silk on the heel of the 'right' shoe is completely gone, and there is a small hole in the linen at the toes. Both shoes have pin holes in both flaps and tongue, where straight pins had kept them closed. Shoes measure Sole 8.5" Heel 3.5" Flaps 4" Toe to top of tongue 4.75" Across toes 4" Inner width 2.25" Back height from top of heel to ankle 2.5" Overall, these shoes are remarkably well-preserved for their age, and are older than the Declaration of Independence!!!!
