~ 18th CENTURY HAND WROUGHT ADJUSTABLE IRON SPIRAL COURTING CANDLESTICK WITH TURNED WOOD BASE ~ ~ PRIMITIVE 18th CENTURY HAND WROUGHT ADJUSTABLE IRON SPIRAL COURTING CANDLESTICK WITH TURNED WOOD BASE ~ ~Very Rare/Excellent Condition/Warm Dark Aged Patina~ ~ NO RESERVE/FREE SHIPPING ~ You're bidding on another of many primitive lighting examples I was fortunate enough to obtain from the private collection of a family that spans two generations! T are many more on the way including 17th and 18th century rush, candle, hanging betty, crusie, brass and whale oil lamps. This is an extremely rare all original and complete hand wrought iron adjustable spiral courting candlestick with it's original hand wrought rattail height adjuster. It also has it's original hand wrought hanger that is part of the spiral candle holder itself. It was designed to be hung from the back of a chair or whatever else was available. The hanger has a wonderful hand forged shape, wide at the middle and tapering to a sharp point at the end. This is primitive craftsmanship at it's best. The forged spiral iron candle holder in mounted in it's original elm or maple turned wood base that shows age worn beauty with an extraordinary warm dark aged patina that only time can give. The candle holder was not simply stuck into the turned wood base. It was constructed with the iron base of the candle holder forced down through the middle of the wood base, then the iron was bent w it protrudes from the bottom of the base, making it permanent and rock solid as can be seen in the pictures. This is a genuine fresh to market late 17th/early 18th century primitive example of early lighting. Adjustable hand wrought spiral courting candlesticks are extremely difficult to come by. Try to find one of these and all you'll find are reproductions and even those are about impossible to locate! This genuine period hand wrought iron adjustable spiral courting candlesticks was mainly used as a sort of "timer". The spiral shape was designed to be set or adjusted by the young lady's father or mother, and when the candle burned down to the top of the holder it was time for the courting gentleman to leave. Or it could be adjusted up higher depending on how well the gentleman suitor was liked or possibly how rich he was! Dimensions: 7 1/2" high with a 3 3/4 x 3 1/2" diameter uneven primitive wood base. The turned elm or maple base is 2 1/2" high with the hand wrought spiral candle holder itself standing 5 1/4" high above the wood base. Condition: Excellent, complete and all original with no condition issues but for the expected age wear to the turned wood base. T are no repairs or damage to the piece. The hand wrought adjuster functions perfectly as designed. You will not find another like it in complete all original excellent condition! This is an extremely rare and valuable example of a primitive hand wrought iron adjustable spiral courting candle holder dating to the late 17th or early 18th century. I've seen another similar piece in an antique shop selling for over $1,000! This extraordinary piece deserves a premier placing in one's collection of the finest antique lighting examples.
